Weather Update:
Irwin County Schools will be closed Monday, March 16, 2026, due to the threat of severe weather. Please stay safe and continue to monitor local weather updates as the system moves through our area tomorrow morning.

The latest update we received included a squall line early Monday morning. Medium-large hail possible. 70 mph winds. A few tornadoes possible. Discreet cells ahead of the front could have large (ef2+) tornadoes and large hail. The tornadoes along the line will be brief. Again, please make sure you have a way to get weather alerts.

The System Spelling Bee was held on Thursday. Prior to the system bee, written tests were administered to students in grades 6–8 to determine the top 10 spellers at Irwin County Middle School. At Irwin County Elementary School, both a written test and an oral bee were conducted to identify the top 10 spellers. These students advanced to compete in the System Spelling Bee.

Emma Thomas, an 8th-grade student, was named the 2026 Spelling Bee Champion, and Teagan Strickland was recognized as the 2026 Spelling Bee Runner-Up.

Emma will advance to compete in the Region 9 Spelling Bee on February 28 in Bainbridge, Georgia. The regional competition is sponsored by the Georgia Association of Educators.

All spelling bee participants worked diligently to prepare for the competition, and we are extremely proud of their hard work and accomplishments.

The Irwin County Spelling Bee Coordinators are Christie Copeland (Irwin County Elementary School) and Maria Johnson (Irwin County Middle School).
